Famotidine is used for:

Treating and preventing ulcers; treating and preventing heartburn associated with acid indigestion and sour stomach. It is also used to treat gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), conditions that cause increased acid secretion, and esophagitis. It also may be used for other conditions as determined by your doctor.

Famotidine is an H2 (histamine) blocker. It reduces stomach acid by blocking one of the chemicals (histamine) that stimulates the release of acid into the stomach.

Do NOT use Famotidine if:

you are allergic to any ingredient in Famotidine or other acid reducers (H2blockers)

Contact your doctor or health care provider right away if any of these apply to you.

Before using Famotidine :

Some medical conditions may interact with Famotidine. Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you have any medical conditions, especially if any of the following apply to you:

if you are pregnant, plan to become pregnant, or are breast-feeding

if you are taking any prescription or nonprescription medicine, herbal preparation, or dietary supplement

if you have allergies to medicines or other substances

if you have kidney or liver problems

Some MEDICINES MAY INTERACT with Famotidine. However, no specific interactions with Famotidine are known at this time.

This may not be a complete list of all interactions that may occur. Ask your health care provider if Famotidine may interact with other medicines that you take. Check with your health care provider before you start, stop, or change the dose of any medicine.

How to use Famotidine :

Use Famotidine as directed by your doctor. Check the label on the medicine for exact dosing instructions.

Famotidine may be taken with or without food.

Take Famotidine with a glass of water.

Take Famotidine at least 2 hours before or after taking cephalosporins (eg, cephalexin), itraconazole, or ketoconazole.

Ask your doctor before taking Famotidine with other acid reducers (antacids).

If a dose is missed, take it as soon as possible. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. Do not take 2 doses at once.

Ask your health care provider any questions you may have about how to use Famotidine.

Important safety information:

Famotidine may cause dizziness. Do not drive, operate machinery, or do anything else that could be dangerous until you know how you react to this medicine. Using Famotidine alone, with certain other medicines, or with alcohol may lessen your ability to drive or perform other potentially dangerous tasks.

If your symptoms do not improve or if they become worse, check with your doctor.

Notify your doctor if you have any symptoms of a bleeding ulcer, such as black, tarry stools or vomit that looks like coffee grounds.

If pain continues or you need to take Famotidine for more than 14 days for heartburn symptoms, stop use and contact your doctor.

You may need to make significant diet and lifestyle changes to help treat and prevent ulcers and other digestive problems, including stress-reduction programs, exercise, and diet changes.

LAB TESTS may be performed to monitor your progress. Be sure to keep all doctor and lab appointments.

Use Famotidine with caution in the ELDERLY because they may be more sensitive to its effects.

PREGNANCY and BREAST-FEEDING: Do not use Famotidine if you are pregnant. If you suspect that you could be pregnant, contact your doctor immediately. If you are or will be breast-feeding while you are using Famotidine , check with your doctor or pharmacist to discuss the risks to your baby.

Possible side effects of Famotidine :

All medicines may cause side effects, but many people have no, or minor, side effects. Check with your doctor if any of these most COMMON side effects persist or become bothersome:

Constipation; diarrhea; dizziness; headache.

Seek medical attention right away if any of these SEVERE side effects occur:

Severe allergic reactions (rash; hives; difficulty breathing; tightness in the chest; swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue); bloody or black stools; convulsions (seizures); difficulty or pain upon swallowing.

What is ranitidine?

Ranitidine is in a group of drugs called histamine-2 blockers. Ranitidine works by reducing the amount of acid your stomach produces.

Ranitidine is used to treat and prevent ulcers in the stomach and intestines. It also treats conditions in which the stomach produces too much acid , such as Zollinger-Ellison syndrome. Ranitidine also treats gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and other conditions in which acid backs up from the stomach into the esophagus, causing heartburn.

Ranitidine may also be used for conditions other than those listed in this medication guide.

What should I discuss with my doctor before using ranitidine?

Before using this medication, tell your doctor if you have:

kidney disease;

liver disease; or

porphyria.

If you have any of the conditions listed above, you may not be able to use ranitidine or you may need a dosage adjustment or special monitoring during treatment.

The effervescent tablet forms of ranitidine contain phenylalanine. If you have phenylketonuria, you should be aware of possible effects this may have on you.

Ranitidine is in the FDA pregnancy category B. This means that it is not expected to be harmful to an unborn baby. Do not use this medication without telling your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant during treatment.

Ranitidine passes into breast milk. Do not take ranitidine without telling your doctor if you are breast-feeding a baby.

This medication can cause you to have unusual results with certain medical tests. Tell any doctor who treats you that you are using ranitidine.

Using this medication may make you more susceptible to pneumonia if you have diabetes, lung disease, a weak immune system, or if you are elderly. Talk with your doctor about your individual risk.

How should I take ranitidine?

Take ranitidine exactly as your doctor has prescribed it for you. Do not use more of the medication than recommended. Do not take ranitidine for longer than your doctor has prescribed.

Take each ranitidine tablet with a full glass of water.

The ranitidine effervescent tablet or granules must be dissolved in water before taking each dose. Tablets or granules should not be chewed, swallowed whole, or dissolved on the tongue.

Place the Zantac 150 mg dose tablet in a full glass (6 to 8 ounces) of water. Allow the tablet to completely dissolve, then drink the entire mixture.

Place the Zantac 25 mg dose tablet in at least 1 teaspoon of water. Allow the tablet to completely dissolve, then drink the entire mixture. If you are giving this medicine to a child, you can place this mixture in a medicine dropper or syringe before giving it to the child.

Ranitidine granules should be mixed with 6 to 8 ounces of water before drinking.

To be sure you get the correct dose, measure the liquid form of ranitidine with a marked measuring spoon or medicine cup, not with a regular table spoon. If you do not have a dose-measuring device, ask your pharmacist for one. Ranitidine syrup may be given to an infant or child by medicine dropper or oral syringe.

Do not stop taking ranitidine without asking your doctor. It may take up to 8 weeks for an ulcer to heal.

Store ranitidine at room temperature away from moisture, heat, and light.

What happens if I miss a dose?

Take the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and take the medicine at the next regularly scheduled time. Do not take extra medicine to make up the missed dose.

What happens if I overdose?

Seek emergency medical attention if you think you have used too much of this medicine.

Symptoms of a ranitidine overdose may include weakness, lack of coordination, severe nausea or vomiting, and a fast heartbeat.

What should I avoid while taking ranitidine?

There are no restrictions on food, beverages, or activity while taking ranitidine, unless otherwise directed by your doctor.

What are the possible side effects of ranitidine?

Stop using ranitidine and get emergency medical help if you have any of these signs of an allergic reaction: hives; difficulty breathing; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat.

Call your doctor at once if you have any of these serious side effects:

easy bruising or bleeding, unusual weakness;

fast or uneven heartbeats; or

jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes).

Other, less serious side effects may be more likely to occur. Continue to take ranitidine and talk to your doctor if you experience

headache (may be severe);

decreased sex drive, impotence;

swollen or tender breasts (in men);

nausea, vomiting, stomach pain; or

diarrhea or constipation.

Side effects other than those listed here may also occur. Talk to your doctor about any side effect that seems unusual or that is especially bothersome.

What drug(s) may interact with ranitidine?

alcohol containing beverages

alendronate

antacids

cefditoren

cefpodoxime

cefuroxime

delavirdine

enoxacin

glipizide

glyburide

iron supplements

itraconazole

For best results, keep using the medication as directed. Talk with your doctor if your symptoms do not improve after 10 days of treatment. Loperamide can cause side effects that may impair your thinking or reactions. Be careful if you drive or do anything that requires you to be awake and alert.

What should I discuss with my healthcare provider before taking loperamide?

Do not use this medication if you are allergic to loperamide, or if you have:

Pantoprazole (Generic Protonix) is used for:

The short-term treatment (7 to 10 days) of severe inflammation and erosion of the esophagus due to gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD, or stomach contents rising back into the esophagus) in adults. The injection is only used when the oral form of Pantoprazole cannot be taken. Pantoprazole is also used to treat certain conditions associated with Zollinger-Ellison syndrome and similar conditions.

Pantoprazole is a proton pump inhibitor. It reduces gastric acid secretion by blocking the final step of acid production by the stomach lining. This decreases the discomfort caused by the stomach contents rising back into the esophagus.

Do NOT use Pantoprazole if:

you are allergic to any ingredient in Pantoprazole

Contact your doctor or health care provider right away if any of these apply to you.

Before using Pantoprazole :

Some medical conditions may interact with Pantoprazole. Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you have any medical conditions, especially if any of the following apply to you:

if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or are breast-feeding

if you are taking any prescription or nonprescription medicine, herbal preparation, or dietary supplement

if you have allergies to medicines, foods, or other substances

if you have liver problems

Some MEDICINES MAY INTERACT with Pantoprazole. Tell your health care provider if you are taking any other medicines, especially any of the following:

Clarithromycin or voriconazole because side effects and toxic effects associated with Pantoprazole may be increased

Digoxin or methotrexate because the actions and side effects of these medicines may be increased

HIV protease inhibitors (eg, ritonavir) because their effectiveness may be decreased by Pantoprazole

This may not be a complete list of all interactions that may occur. Ask your health care provider if Pantoprazole may interact with other medicines that you take. Check with your health care provider before you start, stop, or change the dose of any medicine.

How to use Pantoprazole (Generic Protonix):

Use Pantoprazole as directed by your doctor. Check the label on the medicine for exact dosing instructions.

Pantoprazole is usually administered as an injection at your doctor’s office, hospital, or clinic. If you are using Pantoprazole at home, carefully follow the injection procedures taught to you by your health care provider.

If Pantoprazole contains particles or is discolored, or if the vial is cracked or damaged in any way, do not use it.

Pantoprazole should not be taken within 4 hours of imidazoles (eg, ketoconazole).

If you miss a dose of Pantoprazole , contact your doctor for further instruction.

Ask your health care provider any questions you may have about how to use Pantoprazole.

Important safety information:

Pantoprazole may cause dizziness. Do not drive, operate machinery, or do anything else that could be dangerous until you know how you react to Pantoprazole. Using Pantoprazole alone, with certain other medicines, or with alcohol may lessen your ability to drive or to perform other potentially dangerous tasks.

Pantoprazole may affect the results of certain lab tests (eg, false positive urine screen for THC/marijuana). Make sure laboratory personnel and your doctors know you use Pantoprazole.

Do not reuse needles, syringes, or other materials. Dispose of properly after use. Ask your doctor, nurse, or pharmacist to explain local regulations for selecting an appropriate container and properly disposing of the container when full.

LAB TESTS, such as liver function, may be performed to monitor your progress. Be sure to keep all doctor and lab appointments.

Pantoprazole is not recommended for use in CHILDREN; safety and effectiveness have not been confirmed.

PREGNANCY and BREAST-FEEDING: If you become pregnant, discuss with your doctor the benefits and risks of using Pantoprazole during pregnancy. It is unknown if Pantoprazole is excreted in breast milk. If you are or will be breast-feeding while you are using Pantoprazole , check with your doctor or pharmacist to discuss the risks to your baby.

Possible side effects of Pantoprazole (Generic Protonix):
